PARADISE HARBOUR

Paradise Harbour is located midway along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Whalers whooperated floating factory ships here named the bay before 1920. The natural harbour has spectacularscenery, with peaks of up to 1500 metres in height and glaciers descending into the sea. There arethree entrances, the Aguirre Passage, and the Bryde and Ferguson Channels. There are two bases inthe harbour, the Chilean Gonzalez Videla Station is at Waterboat point on the Aguirre channel tothe north, whilst the Argentine Base Brown (formerly Almirante Brown) is situated on the continentmidway along the harbour shore.We visited Base Brown this morning, to give everyone the opportunity to touch our feet on thecontinental mainland. Until 1984 Almirante Brown was the base conducting Argentina’s Antarcticmarine biology and hydrography. In that year, the base doctor, who did not want to overwinter asecond time, burned down the main base building. The concrete foundations still exist behind theremaining buildings. The base was reopened in the 1990’s but plans to rebuild it were droppedduring Argentina’s 2001 economic crisis. Currently, the former boatshed is used as summeraccommodation for the scientific staff and the cleanup team. The current scientific program iscontinuing the hydrographic work of the 1990’s, and studying the effects of these physical factors onbiological systems in the harbour.

南極半島のパラダイス湾は、捕鯨船の最良の停泊地であったため、捕鯨業者によって名づけられた。この湾には、アルゼンチンのアルミランテ・ブラウン基地がある。その背後の小高い丘からは、美しいパラダイス湾の全景を望むことが出来る。この一帯の断崖には、ズグロムナジロヒメウやキョクアジサシ、マダラフルマカモメが営巣している。また、スコントープ入江のペッツバール氷河を仰ぎ見ながらのダイナミックなゾディアック・クルージングも楽しめる。

パラダイス湾は、昔捕鯨業者があまりにも美しい景色を見てパラダイスだと叫んだ　とか。

捕鯨業者が投錨するのにこの湾は最も楽で天国のようだと言った　とか・・
